Miles Phillips and Lauren Gardella were living in Germantown in a condo community and were looking for more space, as well as a larger lot. He works as a sales representative for International Paper and she holds the same title with Capital Payments, so they had been waiting for the right property to become available in East Memphis. Also, both of their children attend school in East Memphis.
“Our primary requirements were three bedrooms and two bathrooms, minimum,” recalled Miles. “We also wanted a house that had a nice yard, security and a good location. We were able to meet all of these needs with this current property. Searching for a house during COVID had its challenges, but we enlisted the assistance of Sowell agent Leigh Martin. She was very diligent in looking at new and existing MLS listings. Her approach allowed us to see numerous properties online and then focus on the properties that we felt were worth viewing. In the end, we viewed several properties online and visited five or so in person.”
“What drew us to this home was the updated kitchen and the homeyness of the living room,” said Lauren. “The house also allowed us to convert a sitting area into a playroom to give the children their own space. The location was also a major factor in our decision to purchase this home. The backyard was another key area that was special about this property. There’s a large patio area and large yard, giving our children the space to play. The fact that the yard and patio are completely private also gives us peace of mind while they are outdoors.”
Miles and Lauren bought their traditional one-story brick home in Normandy Meadows for $297,500 in July. The home had their requisite three bedrooms and two baths, both of which had already been updated. With almost 1,600 square feet of living space all on one level, there were gorgeous hardwood floors throughout.

“This house had been freshly painted,” explained Lauren. “The roof had been replaced in 2016 and the kitchen was equipped with a new refrigerator, microwave and garbage disposal. There was also a new hot water tank. It all added up to feeling like we were getting a great deal without a lot of things that would need repair or replacement in the near future. In terms of layout, we liked that the house had a separate living room and den, as well as a formal dining room. And there’s a wonderful patio in back.”

“The primary difference between this house and our former home is the layout and space,” said Miles. “Our new home has allowed us to showcase our style and taste and provided us with a larger back yard and patio area. This has been great for both us and our children. Another difference is the location. We enjoyed our previous location, but had wanted to be back in the East Memphis area for some time.”

Even though the family settled into their new home quickly and comfortably, they did make a few changes right off the bat.

“We painted the interior to suit our color preferences and we updated the entryway with new tile and new drywall,” said Lauren “We added plantation shutters, a new front door, and canned lighting throughout the house. Also, we do have several planned changes that are either in progress or that we expect to complete in the future. We would like to paint the exterior, update the exterior shutters, and update the landscaping in the front flower beds. Lastly, we are planning to screen in the back porch, lay blue stone and enhance the outdoor space for entertaining.”
As for their new neighborhood, the couple says it has been great.

“Fortunately, we have several friends in the area, so we were already very familiar with the neighborhood,” explained Miles. “The location is close to all parts of the city, allowing us to enjoy restaurants in East Memphis, or taking our children to the zoo, or visiting relatives in Germantown — all with a short car ride. We have enjoyed meeting our neighbors and our children have made several new friends. We, along with many others, enjoy walking through the neighborhood and chatting with others as we enjoy the fall weather. Overall, it has been an extremely welcoming neighborhood and we are very happy to call it ours.”
