There’s a new vehicle repair shop not far from the heart of Gastonia.
Todd Barr has built a business in painting and drywall in the area over the years. Through his contracting business, Barr’s Painting, he’s worked at businesses like Pharr Yarns, WIX and Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In 2013, Barr, purchased a 7,250-square-feet garage on Avon Street near Long Avenue to use as a hub for his business. The building was practically a shell with garage doors used for storing vehicles when Barr bought the building.
Barr, who’s also had a knack for cars since he was a child, decided to explore fixing cars as a business last year.
“I’ve been parking trucks in it (garage) for seven years and decided to open up a garage,” he said. “I thought, I’m going to help the public.”
Barr renovated the Avon Street building ahead of opening Gas House Garage – a nod to Gastonia’s nickname — in September, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over the last year, Barr fitted the garage with epoxy flooring and new, state-of-the-art machines, including a front-end alignment machine and several lifts, including a lift designed for low-riding sports cars, such as a Chevrolet Corvette.
Plus, those who have time to kill can comfortably lounge on a new sofa in the garage’s waiting room while their car is repaired.
Gas House Garage specializes in domestic vehicle repair, as well as repairs on luxury European auto makers like Mercedes and BMW.
“The quality of the building is NASCAR quality,” Barr said. “I think my biggest [goal] is to take care of people at fair prices and not oversell.”
Though the demand for auto repair services continuously exist, Barr said based on Gaston County’s growth in the last decade, Gastonia’s FUSE District and other recent developments, he felt 2020 was the right year to get into the business.
“It’s coming because of the ball field (FUSE).” he said. “Gastonia’s fixing to pick it up. I think it’s going to bring growth to Gastonia.”
Barr expects drivers heading into downtown Gastonia will notice the freshly-renovated garage and the garage’s brick sign along East Long Avenue.
“This is the gateway to Gastonia,” he said, pointing toward East Long Avenue.
Barr is also looking for Automotive Service Excellence -certified technicians who are ready to get to work. Gas House Garage can be reached at 704-834-1111.
