Like most reality TV personalities, Kristin Cavallari has shared many aspects of her life to viewers. Whether it be family life, or the wins and loses of being an entrepreneur, those who’ve tuned in to Very Cavallari have stood witness to many life milestones. Among them was the launch of her own accessories brand, UNCOMMON JAMES.
One episode that I personally enjoyed was the one revealing challenges of opening a flagship ship. Located in her hometown of Nashville, the UNCOMMON JAMES flagship was set to become more than a boutique. Its pristine, streamlined interiors and clever visual merchandising made the location a lifestyle destination. With the pandemic locking business operations and imposing travel restrictions of 2020, however, Kristin and the UJ team had to think fast, innovate and adapt.
Kristin begins, “Our brick and mortar stores in Nashville and Chicago obviously play a significant role in what we had planned and projected for a year. As a business owner, closing those doors was scary. I was stressful closing down our stores, but we focused more on positives and put more attention on to our e-commerce channel.” For a brand that gained momentum and established fashion credentials through a strong social presence, UNCOMMON JAMES held a significant edge over other businesses making the digital transition only now.
This is not to say that the entrepreneur and her team were comfortably sitting on their laurels. “Our team has gotten really creative with how we can provide an amazing customer experience in a purely digital environment. We’ve taken stock of where we were spending our time and resources. We edited out what wasn’t working and are leaning into areas where we see our community and customers responding.”
Among lifestyle tastemakers, this new way of life where most days are spent at home has seen many shifts. Instead of couture, consumers are more keen on investing in pieces that enhance their private spaces. Case in point, the phenomenal rise of sales in indoor plants. It is also worth noting that many are spending on home improvements or an easy space refresh. For the consummate fashion gal, stylish digs are just as essential as the wardrobe you keep. Inside homes of the well-heeled, décor is as much a reflection of style as shoes or bags.
It them seemed like natural progression for a brand like UNCOMMON JAMES to venture into a home line: UJ Home. Kristin explains: “I love chic home accessories and warming up your kitchen, bar, and bathroom with modern touches. As I’ve gotten older, my home has become very important to me, I want it to be warm and cozy and have great energy. Ambiance is crucial and I achieve that with candles and little touches of elegance.” Typically, re-doing a home is considered a luxurious indulgence. UJ Home, however, makes creating cozy spaces at home more accessible. “I want everyone to know that you can change the feeling of a room with small touches. It doesn’t have to be a massive investment or statement piece.” From barware, copper kitchen accessories, serving boards and scented candles, UJ Home offers a wide range of items to suit modern lifestyles. Kristina shares, “All of our UJ items are accessible yet we pride ourselves on clean, modern design that can be styled to your own personal taste. We want you to reimagine these items in your own home, however you see fit.”
