Maldon & Tiptree 0-1 Morecambe: Shrimps progress in FA Cup despite spirited home effort

Morecambe edged past a spirited Maldon & Tiptree side 82 places below them in the pyramid to book an FA Cup second round place for only the second time in the past eight seasons.

Adam Phillips thumped the League Two side ahead from the penalty spot just before half-time, sending Maldon & Tiptree’s Ben McNamara the wrong way after Carlos Mendes Gomes was tripped by the otherwise impeccable keeper.

McNamara had already saved from Phillips’ edge-of-the-box snapshot, and smothered at the feet of Aaron Wildig, while visiting keeper Jake Turner at the other denied striker Shomari Barnwell one-on-one.

Australian keeper McNamara continued to defy the visitors, brilliantly foiling Phillips again, while there was a controversial offside call against Mendes-Gomes who looked to have sprung the trap to score but the flag went up.

Turner had to be alert to a swinging corner and the eighth-tier side’s leading scorer Scott Vyse dragged wide but it was largely one-way traffic in the second period, albeit well defended by Wayne Brown’s home side.

Cole Stockton should have finished it but headed wide when unmarked.

The Jammers, who play in the eighth tier Isthmian League Division One North, made life tricky for their higher-level opponents, particularly in the first half, but their efforts failed to bear fruit as the extra conditioning and experience of their full-time opponents proved telling.

They reached the second round last year, their best performance in the competition, but were unable to repeat the feat.

Derek Adams, who took charge almost a year to the day, saw his Shrimps side extend their unbeaten run to three games and pick up only their fourth clean sheet of the campaign.
