SARASOTA COUNTY – A stretch of road with one of the most notorious bottlenecks near Siesta Key is getting an upgrade, and the Florida Department of Transportation needs your input.

The upgrades will be constructed in two phases from Beneva Road to Caribbean Drive and from Caribbean Drive to Stickney Point Road.

The state transportation agency will hold a virtual public workshop for both projects at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. You may join online or by phone.

Design improvements to U.S. 41 between Beneva Road and Stickney Point Road are meant to create a roadway that serves vehicles as well as pedestrians and bicyclists. FDOT’s proposed design includes the shifting pave shoulders from four feet to six feet to make room for buffered bike lanes. It also will widen the right turn lanes to accommodate for the new bike lanes.

FDOT also will add a 6-foot-wide concrete sidewalk along both sides of U.S. 41. Driveways – those entry and exit points to a shopping center – will also be modified to accommodate Americans with Disabilities Guidelines, the new bike lanes, and to bring them up to current design standards.

Modifications to existing traffic signals and crosswalks will also be made. However, FDOT has yet to identify specific improvements.

Construction of these improvements is estimated at $4.57 million, and FDOT anticipates construction to begin summer 2022.
