Morecambe edged past a spirited Maldon & Tiptree side 82 places below them in the pyramid to book an FA Cup second round place for only the second time in the past eight seasons.
Adam Phillips thumped the League Two side ahead from the penalty spot just before half-time, sending Maldon & Tiptree’s Ben McNamara the wrong way after Carlos Mendes Gomes was tripped by the otherwise impeccable keeper.
McNamara had already saved from Phillips’ edge-of-the-box snapshot, and smothered at the feet of Aaron Wildig, while visiting keeper Jake Turner at the other denied striker Shomari Barnwell one-on-one.
Australian keeper McNamara continued to defy the visitors, brilliantly foiling Phillips again, while there was a controversial offside call against Mendes-Gomes who looked to have sprung the trap to score but the flag went up.
Turner had to be alert to a swinging corner and the eighth-tier side’s leading scorer Scott Vyse
